An examination of the real life phenomenon known as 'the
veil'; a tissue that on rare occasions covers the face and heads of babies at the time of birth. From ancient
times this tissue has been called the veil by some, and the birth caul by others. Those so born are referred to as a
'caulbearer'.
Through the ages there has always been the belief among many that the veil is somehow
imbued with qualities that bestow upon its recipients certain powers and blessings that might include ... unusually good fortune,
the gift of second sight, healing powers, magical powers, or at the very least, great inituitive powers.

"The
good fortune associated with cauls was believed to be transferable, which is one reason they were considered such a valuable
commodity in ancient times, and why fear was a practical emotion for those in possession of a caul. Great caution was
exercised because not only ordinary citizens, but witches and wizards sought what was considered to be the transferable magic
of the caul.
Families passed cauls down
from one generation to the next, or if they needed money, sold them to the highest bidder.
