BRIDGE LIFTS A COMMON SIGHT IN CHICAGO

 1

The first drawbridge was built in Chicago in 1834 on Dearborn Street. Unfortunately, it didn't function properly and had to be torn down. Today, there are about 50 drawbridges with between 35-40 still operating. The city harbors approximately 5,000 boats in 9 major harbors along Lake Michigan in the summer months. Those boats are required to leave the lake in the Fall due to icing in the winter. They return in the Spring when the bridges along the Chicago River are raised on specific days and times to allow boats to come out on the lake. Sometimes there are as many as 20-30 boats, while at other times there may be as few as one or two. The bridges are said to be raised more than 30,000 times during the course of each year.
